Thoughts on Mapping
Mapping requires the trace. It does not invent any information or data that doesnt already exist. It is only the act of taking what exists in the trace (anything and everything) and reconstructing the way that information is presented. Through selection, isolation, vizualization and all those other 'tions mapping presents unseen relationships that were not before apparent. That is all that it can do. Not an easy task

I agree, in my mind the trace must come first but in order for mapping to occur, discovery must result. This may also require speculation on the unknown with bias towards your vision of that unknown. Like an old sailor map with "monsters" in the deep, treasure, etc. Therefore, it may be helpful to approach it with the given (trace) and map your perceived reality (after all, is it necessarily imagined if you perceive it to be real?). Or, am I full of shit?
